What is your film about?

"The Big Gay Musical" is about the production of an off-Broadway show called "Adam & Steve, Just the way God made 'em" and about the lives of the two actors playing Adam and Steve in the show. One of them deals with finding love and the other one deals with coming out to his religious parents and accepting himself as gay. The film has great musical song and dance numbers, lots of comedy and some drama too. It's a lot of fun!

How is it doing in the festival circuit?

We premiered the film a the Philadelphia Gay Film Festival back in July where it played Closing Night. The film has been received very well at the festivals and at over half of our screenings this fall we are playing opening night or closing night!

Who are the members of the cast and how was your relationship with them?

Most of our actors are Broadway actors. And they often blew me away as they are not just great actors but also amazing singers and dancers. I'm pride myself on being a actors' director. Since I'm also an actor myself, my favorite part of directing is working with the actors and figuring out how to get them to do what I want :) Usually I am able to build up a good rapport with my actors and I had a great working relationship with both both Daniel and Joey who stars in this film.

How was the production process?

It was a quick shoot -- only 3 weeks. Fred Caruso (who also wrote the script) and I divided directing duties with he directing the musical theater production within the film and me directing the "real world" stuff. If was tough for me sometimes not being in charge and having to take a backseat when we were shooting the musical theater scenes but since I have no music theater background that was probably for the best :)

Are you coming to LesGaiCineMad in November to present your film?

I wish! This is my third film playing at the festival and I would love to visit sometime. Perhaps with my next one!

"The Big Gay Musical" trata de la producción de un show fuera del circuito de Broadway denominado "Adam & Steve, Just the way God made 'em" y de las vidas de los dos actores que interpretan a Adam y Steve en el show. Uno de ellos intenta enamorarse y el otro intenta salir del armario ante los ojos de sus religiosos padres y que le acepten como gay. La película contiene fabulosos números de baile y canciones, mucha comedia y también algo de drama. ¡Es muy divertida!

¿Cómo está funcionando en los festivales?

Estrenamos la película en el Festival de cine Gay de Filadelfia en julio donde se emitió en la sesión de clausura. La película ha tenido una gran acogida en los festivales y más de la mitad de nuestras proyecciones de este otoño se están emitiendo la sesión de apertura o en la sesión de clausura.

¿Quiénes son los actores y qué tal fue tu relación con ellos durante la preparación y rodaje de la película?

La mayoría de nuestros actores son actores de Broadway. Y a menudo me dejan alucinado ya que no sólo son grandes actores sino también increíbles cantantes y bailarines. Me enorgullezco de ser director. Como yo también soy actor, mi parte favorita de la dirección es la de trabajar con los actores y buscar la forma de conseguir que hagan lo que yo quiero :) Por lo general, soy capaz de tener una buena relación con mis actores y tanto con Daniel y Joey, protagonistas de esta película, tuve una gran relación de trabajo.

¿Cómo fue el proceso de producción?

Fue un rodaje rápido, tan sólo 3 semanas. Fred Caruso (que también escribió el guión) y yo nos repartimos las tareas de dirección: él se encargó de la producción musical de la película y yo de la dirección de todo lo relacionado con el "mundo real". Para mi fue a veces difícil no llevar la dirección y tener que desempeñar un papel secundario cuando rodábamos las escenas del musical, pero ya que no tengo experiencia en ese campo creo que fue probablemente lo mejor :)

¿Vienes a LesGaiCineMad en Noviembre para presentarla?

¡Me encantaría! Esta es la tercera película mía que se emite en el festival y me encantaría asistir alguna vez. ¡Quizás con la siguiente!
