What is your film about?
Darren Flaxstone, Christian Martin and Simon Pearce's SHANK is an adrenaline-rush exploration of boys doing boys in the gangland precincts of Bristol, England. Teenage distraction comes in the form of drugs, raw sex and the practice of using cell phones to record acts of ultra-violence – It's a way of life for a all to recognisable collection of young street thugs who prey on the innocent, with particular attention to bashing queers.
The 21-year-old first feature director puts a hot young cast through their paces. The brooding Wayne Virgo is Cal, a mixed-race queer boy who is torn between his need for manly affection and the intoxicating power he feels at the apex of a loutish gang. It's headed, in an unusual and effective twist, by a nasty girl leader barely out of her teens, Nessa (the surly, sultry Alice Payne).
Cal's best mates with an especially vile if manly basher, Jonno (Tom Bott). When not stomping queers, Cal and Juno take turns breathing pot smoke down each other's throats, waiting for a buzz.
One day, Cal resists Nessa and Jonno's pummeling of a French exchange student, Olivier (Marc Laurent). This bold, out-of-character move puts Cal on the gang's enemies list, and throws him into a complicated, seriously hot affair with Olivier, which is particularly unsettling because of its tender nature.
Pearce whips a savvy script (by Flaxstone and Martin) into a riveting tale of the highs and lows of a new techno generation who crave sensation at any cost. Undergirding this very authentic urban nightmare is a sense of British class violence dating back to Dickens

How is it doing in the festival circuit? Has it received any award? Any other merit?
SHANK premiered at Melbourne's Queerfest in March 2009 - since then it has gone on to screen at over 40 International Film Festivals - from Madrid to Tel Aviv, to New York, Toronto, CapeTown, Turin, San Francisco, Vancouver etc to name a handful. At the Miami L&G Festival Simon won The Roger Walker Dack Award for Emerging Talent in Queer Cinema and the film has been nominated for a Diversity Award, and has been in competition for Best Picture in over 10 festivals as well as being awarded one of the festival favourites at Philly Queerfest. Who are the members of the cast and how was your relationship with them?
The cast all averaged 19years in age, and Simon was 21yrs old when he took on directing. We all got on extremely well thanks in part to 2 weeks of rehearsal and accommodating all the cast in one big house together during the filming. Lets just say that some of the cast took on their character's roles in the house and there was some bedroom swapping!!

How was the production process?
In January 2008 Darren and Christian had the idea for SHANK during a dinner party conversation, by the end of the meal the outline had been drafted out on a napkin after they both shared ideas. Within a month a 14 page outline was written, within three months the first draft of the script was completed - by July 2008 Christian and Darren had hired Simon, cast and located the film and completed a further 8 drafts of the script!
By the end of the August the film was shot and by December 2008 the whole thing was completed and delivered. It was a rapid process but having produced multi million $ films this was by far the easiest to put together and made for a fraction of the usual costs.

Are you coming to LesGaiCineMad in November to present your film?
Yes I shall be there from the 31st October until the 6th November - I can't wait - a market specifically for L&G films is long overdue and a great idea...can't wait to talk about our new film as well....RELEASE....

SHANK de Darren Flaxstone, Christian Martin y Simon Pearce es una adrenalínica exploración de chicos saliendo con chicos en el mundo del crimen de los alrededores de Bristol, Inglaterra. Las distracciones adolescentes vienen en forma de drogas, sexo salvaje y de usar sus móviles para grabar actos de violencia ultra. Es un estilo de vida para una demasiado reconocible colección de jóvenes mafiosos quienes se aprovechan de los inocentes especialmente atacando gays.
Este primerizo director de 21 años pone a prueba a un joven y atractivo reparto. El siniestro Wayne Virgo es Cal, un chico gay, mezcla de razas, que se debate entre su necesidad de afecto y el intoxicante poder que siente en la cumbre de una banda brutal. Es empujado, en un inusual y efectivo giro, por una cruel chica algo mayor que adolescente, Nessa (la segura, sensual Alice Payne)
De los amigos de Carl, Jonno (Tom Bott) es especialmente vil y violento. Cuando no están molestando gays Carl y Juno en turnos aspiran humo de marihuana en la boca del otro esperando colocarse.
Un día Cal evita que Nessa y Jonno den una paliza a un estudiante de intercambio francés, Oliver (Marc Laurent). Esta valiente acción pone a Cal en la lista de enemigos de la banda y lo coloca en una complicada y realmente caliente relación con Oliver, quien es particular perturbador por su tierna naturaleza.
Pearce transforma un inteligente guión (de Flaxstone and Martin) en una fascinante historia de los altos y bajos de una nueva generación que ansía emociones a cualquier precio. Debajo de esta auténtica pesadilla urbana hay un sentido de violencia de clase que nos remonta a Dickens.

SHANK se estrenó en el Queerfest de Melbourne en Marzo de 2009. Desde ese momento se ha proyectado en alrededor de 40 festivales internacionales desde Madrid a Tel Aviv, Nueva York, Toronto, Cape town, Torino, San Francisco, Vancouver por nombrar algunos. En el Festival L&G de Miami Simon ganó el Premio Roger Walker Dack como nuevo talento del cine queer y la película ha sido nominada a un Diversity Award y ha estado en competición para Mejor Película en alrededor de 10 festivales. Ha sido también premiada como una de las favoritas en el Festival Philly Queerfest. ¿Quiénes son los actores y qué tal fue tu relación con ellos durante la
preparación y rodaje de la película?

El promedio de edad del equipo era de 19 años y Simon tenía 21 años asumió la dirección. Todos nos llevamos realmente muy bien gracias en parte a 2 semanas de ensayos y a alojar a todo el equipo junto en una casa durante el rodaje. Digamos que algunos se tomaron en serio su personaje y hubo algún intercambio de habitaciones.

¿Cómo fue el proceso de producción?

En enero de 2008 a Darren y Christian se les ocurrió la idea de SHANK conversando durante una cena, al finalizar la comida el esbozo ya estaba hecho en una servilleta. Durante un mes escribieron un boceto de 14 páginas, el primer borrador de guión se completó luego de 3 meses. Para Julio de 2008 Christian y Darren habían contratado a Simon, al equipo, la locación y hecho ya 8 borradores del guión!
A finales de Agosto la película fue rodada y para Diciembre de 2008 todo estaba completo y entregado. Fue un proceso rápido pero habiendo producido películas multimillonarias esta fue por lejos la mas fácil de hacer y la hicimos con una fracción del coste usual.

¿Vienes a LesGaiCineMad en Noviembre para presentarla?

Si, estaré allí desde el 31 de Octubre al 6 de Noviembre. No puedo esperar!. Un mercado específico de películas LGBT es una gran idea.. tampoco puede esperarme a hablar sobre nuestra nueva película… RELEASE…
