What is your film about?

"Parents Reborn" (original title "Due volte genitori", spanish title "Padres por partida doble") looks straight into the heart of the family as it adjusts to the news that their son or daughter is homosexual. Mothers and fathers cope with their crushed expectations and begin to accept their own rebirth as parents, aside from the issue of homosexuality itself.


How is it doing in the festival circuit? Has it received any award? Any other merit?

"Parents Reborn" was produced in Italy by Agedo (Parents of lesbians and gays association) and this year had several theatrical screenings in Italy organized with many local associations, according to Agedo aim to contact parents and families; this was mostly out of the festival circuit. "Parents Reborn" then won as the best documentary at the Milan Mix LGBT festival in june; Madrid is the second festival for the movie. So its first merit is to give to LGBT people the hope that is possible to come out in their own family, and help their parents, in a country that seems to be more and more homophobic. Some teacher and local governement begun to use the fim at school and university. Recently the italian Minister for equal rights offered to cooperate with Agedo carrying "Parent Reborn" in public schools, and the press also gave special attention to the film.


Who are the members of the cast and how was your relationship with them?

"Parents Reborn" is a documentary feature. So my special cast are 18 mothers and fathers with gay children. I had a very special relationship with them, for a while I could say that I had all of them as parents of mine. It wasn't easy, but it has been a very emotional and deep experience.


How was the production process?

The opportunity came from a European Daphne project called “Family Matters. Supporting families to prevent violence against gay and lesbian youth”. Agedo was in charge to produce a video. I wanted to make it a feature documentary. It was a long way. The first script was from 2002. Then the first shooting in December 2005. Then I had a long collaboration with the psycologist to prepare the main shooting, that was in 2007 and 2008. And then editing in 2008. Director's cut is January 2009. I had 120 hours of shooting to edit.
So it was a long process, that made me able to follow this parents for a long while and show how they changed in time thanks to their sons.


Are you coming to LesGaiCineMad in November to present your film?

YES, I will arrive the 31st of october and I will attend the presentation of "Due volte genitori" on november 5th.

.¿De qué trata tu película?

“Due Volte Genitori” que es el título original de “Padres por Partida Doble” o “Parents Reborn” (nombres que se le han dado a la película en España y EE UU respectivamente) muestra el interior de la familia que se está adaptando al hecho de que su hijo o hija sean homosexuales. Las madres y los padres asumen la frustración de sus expectativas y empiezan a aceptar una especie de “renacimiento” como padres, al margen de la cuestión de la homosexualidad.


¿Cómo está funcionando en festivales? ¿Ha recibido algún premio? ¿Algún otro mérito destacable?

La película fue producida en Italia por Agedo (Asociación de Padres de Lesbianas y Gays) y durante este año ha sido proyectada en diversos eventos organizados con varias asociaciones locales, siguiendo el propósito de Agedo de llegar a padres y familias la película ha estado alejada del circuito tradicional de los festivales. Ha ganado el premio al Mejor Documental del Festival Mix LGBT de Milán celebrado en junio, Madrid será el segundo festival en el que se presenta. El mérito principal de la película es dar esperanza a lesbianas, gays, bisexuales, transexuales para que puedan expresarse en sus propias familias, ayudando a sus padres, en un país que parece ser cada vez más homofóbico. Algunos profesores y ayuntamientos han empezado a proyectar la película en colegios y universidades. Hace poco el ministro italiano para la igualdad de derechos se ofreció a cooperar con Agedo proyectando la película en colegios públicos, también la prensa le ha dado una cobertura especial.


¿Quiénes son los actores y qué tal fue tu relación con ellos durante la preparación y rodaje de la película?

“Padres por partida doble” es un documental. Así que mis actores son 18 madres y padres con hijos homosexuales. Tuve una relación especial con ellos, durante un tiempo hasta tuve la sensación de que eran como mis padres. No fue fácil pero fue una experiencia intensa y emocionante.


¿Cómo fue el proceso de producción?

La oportunidad de hacer la película surgió de una proyecto europeo Daphne cuyo nombre es “La familia cuenta. Apoyando a las familias para prevenir la violencia contra los jóvenes homosexuales”. La asociación Agedo era la encargada de realizar un vídeo sobre el tema. Yo quería hacer un documental. Fue un proceso largo. El primer guión se hizo en 2002. Las primeras tomas en diciembre de 2005. Luego hubo un largo trabajo con psicólogos antes del rodaje, esto fue entre 2007 y 2008. La edición se hizo en 2008. El montaje se acabó en enero de este año. Tenía 120 horas de filmación para editar.
Así que fue un largo camino, que me permitió estar con los padres mucho tiempo y mostrar como cambiaron gracias a sus hijos.


¿Vienes a LesGaiCineMad en Noviembre para presentarla?

SÍ, llegaré el 31 de Octubre y estaré en la presentación de la película el día 5 de Noviembre.
