What is your film about?
Sex Positive explores the life of Richard Berkowitz, a controversial gay S&M sex worker turned AIDS activist in the 1980s in New York, who helped invent the idea of safe sex. Berkowitz emerged from the epicenter of the epidemic demanding a solution to the problem long before anyone else would pay attention. Now, destitute and alone, he tells his story to a world who never wanted to listen.

How is it doing in the festival circuit? Has it received any award? Any
other merit?
The film has played in over 30 film festivals including the South by Southwest Film Festival, London Film Festival, Frameline Film Festival, Outfest Film Festival. It won the Grand Jury Prize at the Outfest. It was distributed by Regent in theaters in America and has been distributed in 10 countries around the world.

Who are the members of the cast and how was your relationship with them?
The interviewes are comprised of Richard's friends, family and other activists and doctors from the time period.

How was the production process?
We shot for a few months and edited in my apartment. My producer, David Oliver Cohen, and I were working in a cave. The film was shot on HD on the Panasonic HVX 200 at 720p24 with P2 cards. I edited the film in Final Cut Pro. The cinematographer, Alex Bergman, did the movie for free with all of his own sound and video equipment. We shot the interviews handheld to give them a more dynamic feel. We also shot the pictures in HD as opposed to scanning them because it looked a lot better. The archival material was recorded off old VHS tapes. I am glad we didn't get the source tapes from new organizations because the grainy, discolored VHS footage gives the film a more authentic, vintage feel. If we copied the beta tapes the video would have been super sharp, which isn't as interesting visually.

Sex Positive explora la vida de Richard Berkowitz, un controvertido homosexual trabajador del sexo S&M (sadista y masoquista) que se transformó en un activista contra el SIDA en los 80’s en Nueva York, quien ayudó a crear la idea del “sexo seguro”. Berkowitz surgió desde el epicentro de la epidemia pidiendo una solución al problema mucho antes que cualquier otro prestara atención. Ahora en estado de indigencia y solo, cuenta su historia a un mundo que nunca quiso escuchar.

¿Cómo está funcionando en festivales? ¿Ha recibido algún premio? ¿Algún

La película ha participado en alrededor de 30 festivales incluyendo Southwest Film Festival, London Film Festival, Frameline Film Festival, Outfest Film Festival ganando en este el premio del Gran Jurado. ¿Quiénes son los actores y qué tal fue tu relación con ellos durante la
preparación y rodaje de la película?
Los entrevistados fueron los amigos de Richard, su familia y otros activistas y médicos de aquel momento.

¿Cómo fue el proceso de producción?
Rodamos unos pocos meses y luego montamos en mi apartamento. Mi productor David Oliver Cohen y yo estuvimos trabajando encerrados. La película fue rodada en HD con una Panasonic HVX 200 a 720p24 con tarjetas P2 y la monté con Final Cut Pro. Si copiábamos las cintas beta el vídeo hubiera sido muy nítido lo que no hubiera sido tan interesante visualmente.
