What is your film about?
My movie (Football Under Cover) is about the first female football (soccer) match in the Islamic Republic of Iran. It is about the girls in both teams involved (an amateur club from Berlin and the Iranian national team), as well as about the people organizing this match. It is about the difficulties and obstacles in the way of the organization process and about the enthusiasm of the women in the audience who get to enter a football stadium for the first time in their lives. It's about a clash of civilizations, and it's about finding surprising familiarities, friends even, in another part of the world.

How is it doing in the festival circuit? Has it received any award? Any other merit?
The festival circuit has been very good to us, we have been to 30+ festivals and received lots of love, applause, good reviews, and some awards: At the Berlin Film Festival 2008 (The Teddy Award for Best Documentary and the Teddy Audience Award), Molise Cinema 2008 (Best Film), Outfest L.A. 2008 (Freedom Award), Pink Apple Zurich 2008 (Audience Award), Festival Internacional DerHumALC Buenos Aires 2009 (Winner of the Section Gender Views), nominations for the First Steps
Award for best first film in Germany, and for Prix Europa as best international co-production (award ceremony is to be held next month).

Who are the members of the cast and how was your relationship with them?
Since Football Under Cover is a documentary, there is not really a cast. However, 3 of the girls playing in the Berlin team are my sisters, and they're the ones who organized the match and produced the film, so the film is a kind of family project. With them, as well as with my Iranian co-director Ayat Najafi and our wonderful crew of sound and
camera students, we formed the inner core of this big enterprise.

How was the production process?
It was the first film for pretty much everyone involved, so we had a hard time getting the project financed. After 3 months of rejections, we started shooting on our own expenses and in 3 more months had a 20-minute teaser. With that, we managed to interest a Berlin-based production company, and with them backing us we managed to get TV and funding involved. Now we had the security of experienced producers behind us, but had to struggle all the more to get our artistic vision across which of course was threatened to be compromised by too many people trying to have it their way. Fortunately, for us and for the film, we succeeded.

¿De qué trata tu película?
Mi película (FOOTBALL UNDER COVER) trata del primer partido de fútbol femenino en la República Islámica de Irán. Habla de las chicas que juegan en ambos equipos implicados (un club aficionado de Berlín y el equipo Nacional Iraní), así como sobre la gente que organiza este partido. Habla sobre las dificultades y obstáculos en el camino de la organización y el entusiasmo de las mujeres del auditorio que consiguen entrar en un estadio de fútbol por primera vez en sus vidas. Es un choque de civilizaciones, y un descubrimiento de familiaridades sorprendentes y hasta de amistades, en otra parte del mundo.

¿Cómo está funcionando en festivales? ¿Ha recibido algún premio? ¿Algún otro mérito destacable?
El circuito de los festivales nos ha ido muy bien, hemos ido a más de 30 festivales y hemos recibido mucho amor, aplausos, comentarios positivos, y algunos premios en: el Festival de Cinema de Berlín 2008 (el Teddy Award para el Mejor Documental y el Teddy Audience Award), Molise Cinema 2008 (premio Mejor Película), Outfest de Los Ángeles 2008 (Freedom Award), Pink Apple de Zurich 2008 (Premio de Auditorio), Festival Internacional DerHumALC de Buenos Aires 2009 (Ganador de la Sección Gender Views), nominado para el premio First Steps para la mejor película en Alemania, y para el Prix Europa como mejor coproducción internacional (la ceremonia de premiación será celebrada el próximo mes).

¿Quiénes son los actores y qué tal fue tu relación con ellos durante la preparación y rodaje de la película?
Ya que Football Under Cover es un documental, no hay realmente un casting. Sin embargo, tres de las chicas que juegan en el equipo de Berlín son mis hermanas, y son ellas las que organizaron el partido y produjeron la película, así que la película es una especie de proyecto de familia. Con ellas, así como con mi codirector iraní Ayat Najafi, juntos con nuestro maravilloso equipo de sonido y estudiantes de cámara, hemos formado el corazón de esta gran empresa.

¿Cómo fue el proceso de producción?
Ésta era la primera película que implica a casi todos, y es por eso que hemos tenido unos cuantos problemas para conseguir el dinero para financiar el proyecto. Después de 3 meses de rechazos, empezamos a rodar a nuestro cargo y en más de 3 meses tenía un rompecabezas de 20 minutos. Con esto, logramos interesar una compañía de producción de Berlín, y con el apoyo de ellos logramos llegar a la TV y a obtener la financiación. Entonces teníamos la seguridad de productores con experiencia detrás de nosotros, pero tuvimos que luchar tanto más para conseguir nuestra visión artística, la cual por supuesto fue amenazada de estar comprometido a demasiadas personas que trataban de obtener la película a su manera. Por suerte, para nosotros y para la película, tuvimos éxito.
