What is your film about?

The film is about Göran who has always wanted to become a father. Now he has married Sven and they have been cleared for adoption by the Swedish authorities. The problem is that no country seems willing to give a child to a homosexual couple, but Göran doesn’t give up the dream to have what so many others take for granted, a real family.
One day Göran and Sven receive a letter with an offer from the social services to take care of "Patrik 1,5". A Swedish child who needs a new family. They happily accept the offer, and they buy a pram and they decorate the nursery. But the day little Patrik is expected a lanky teenager rings their door-bell. He says his name is Patrik and that he has come to live there. They realize, horror-struck, that their little Patrik has been mistaken for a criminal teenager, who in addition hates gay people. They try to get in contact with the social services to put things right, but it’s the weekend and no responsible person is there. They just have to put up with the teenager, until the misunderstanding is discovered. Patrik dislikes the situation as much as they do, and he shows very clearly that he’s disgusted by their presence so close to him.
One conflict after another rise between Sven and Patrik, but at the same time the relation between Göran and Patriks gets better. Patrik realizes that he knows quite a lot about gardening after some time at a juvenile home, and he offers to help in the garden for a consideration. Thanks to this Göran and Patrik get closer to each other,
and Sven feels out of it. After the weekend they go back to the social services office again. Finally everything will be set right. But the meeting is a shock. It turns out that there’s been a mistake at the transcription of the offer, a comma was misplaced and "Patrik, 15" has become "Patrik 1,5". The little boy of a year and a half, that Göran so longed for doesn’t exist, only in his dreams. Göran is devastated but decides anyway to let Patrik stay with them, until the social services find a new family for him. Sven can’t handle the situation and he leaves the house and Göran alone in his grief. When Sven returns, a few days later, Göran doesn’t want to live with him again. After all that has happened, Göran has become sceptical about their relation. Göran and Patrik keep getting closer to one another, and when the day comes, when Patrik is offered a new family, Göran is no longer sure about how he wants to live his life.


How is it doing in the festival circuit? Has it received any award? Any other merit?

The film has been around in many filmfestivals worldwide, for example: 2008 Toronto International Filmfestival, 2008 Cinefest Sudbury International Film Festival, 2009 Palm Springs International Film Festival...

Who are the members of the cast and how was your relationship with them?
My main cast were, as Göran - Gustaf Skarsgård, as Sven - Torkel Petersson, and as Patrik - the teenage amateur Tom Ljungman. We had a wonderful time together, but filled with hard work. We rehearsed for several weeks before we started to shoot, and that was a good way of getting to know eachother, the characters and their relationships. I had worked with Torkel Petersson before in a film called Immediate Boarding, but this was my first film with Gustaf Skarsgård (one of my favourite actors!) and of course with the brilliant one amateur Tom Ljungman, who acted as if he was a true pro!

How was the production process?
This film really means something special to me, because of my close work with the actors. The process was hard (as always!), with not enough time or money (as always!), but I am very proud of the result, so I have almost forgot the difficulties by now.

Are you coming to LesGaiCineMad in November to present your film?
Unfortunately, it seems like I can't come to Madrid because of too much work with upcoming projects.

¿De qué trata tu película?
La película trata sobre Göran, quien siempre quiso convertirse en padre. Ahora, se ha casado con Sven y han sido aprobados para la adopción por las autoridades suecas. El problema es que ningún país parece querer dar un niño a una pareja homosexual, pero Cöran no quiere olvidar el sueño de tener lo que muchos otros tienen concedido: una familia real.
Un día, Göran y Sven reciben una carta con la oferta de los Servicios Sociales de hacerse cargo de “Patrick 1,5”, un niño sueco que necesita una nueva familia. Aceptan alegremente la oferta, compran un andador y decoran el cuarto de los niños. Pero el día en que Patrick era esperado, un larguirucho adolescente toca a su puerta. Dice que es Patrick y que ha venido a vivir allí. Se dan cuenta, con horror, de que su pequeño Patrick ha sido confundido con un criminal adolescente quien además, odia a los gays. Tratan de entrar en contacto con los Servicios Sociales para arreglar el error, pero es fin de semana y no encuentran a ningún responsable. Tienen que admitir al adolescente hasta que el error sea subsanado. A Patrick le disgusta la situación tanto como a ellos y muestra claramente que está disgustado por la presencia de la pareja cerca de él.
Se produce un conflicto tras otro entre Sven y Patrick, pero al mismo tiempo, la relación entre Göran y Patrik mejora. Patrik se da cuenta que sabe bastante de jardinería tras el tiempo que pasó en un hogar juvenil y se ofrece a ayudar en el jardín. Gracias a esto, Patrik y Göran se acercan mientras Sven se siente apartado. Tras el fin de semana, van de nuevo a la oficina de los Servicios Sociales. Finalmente todo se arreglará. Pero la reunión resulta un golpe inesperado. Al parecer, ha habido un error en la transcripción de la oferta y “Patrik, 15” se convirtió en “Patrik 1,5”. El pequeño niño de año y medio que Göran tanto deseaba existe sólo en sus sueños. Göran está destruído, pero decide que, de todas formas, Patrik se quede con ellos hasta que los Servicios Sociales le encuentren una nueva familia. Sven es incapaz de manejar la situación y deja la casa y a Göran con su pesar. Cuando, unos días después, Sven vuelve, Göran no quiere volver a vivir con él. Tras todo lo sucedido, Göran se ha vuelto escéptico en cuanto a su relación. Vöran y Patrik se mantienen unidos y cuando el día llega y Patrik es ofrecido a una nueva familia, Göran no está ya seguro acerca de cómo quiere vivir su vida.

¿Cómo está funcionando en festivales? ¿Ha recibido algún premio? ¿Algún otro mérito destacable?
La película ha sido exhibida en muchos festivales de cine alrededor del mundo, por ejemplo: Festival Internacional de Cine de Toronto, 2008; Festival Internacional de Cine Cinefest Sudbury, 2008; Festival Internacional de Cine de Palm Springs, 2009…

Premios:
- Mejor película en Lengua extranjera, 19º Festival de Cine Queer de Melbourne.
- Premio del público HBO. Festival Internacional de Cine de Provincetown.
- Mejor realización. Festival Internacional de Cine LGTB Frameline de San Francisco.

¿Quiénes son los actores y qué tal fue tu relación con ellos durante la preparación y rodaje de la película?
Mi reparto principal fue, como Göran, Gustaf Skarsgård; como Sven, Torkel Petersson y como Patrik, el adolescente aficionado, Tom Ljungman.
Pasamos un maravilloso tiempo juntos, pero lleno de un duro trabajo. Ensayamos durante algunas semanas antes de comenzar el rodaje y fue una buena manera de conocernos, los caracteres y su relación. Había trabajado antes on Torkel Petersson en una película llamada Inmediate Bording, pero este fue mi primer trabajo con Gustaf Skarsgård, (¡uno de mis actores favoritos!) y, por supuesto, con el brillante aficionado Tom Ljungman, ¡quien actuó como si fuera un verdadero profesional!

¿Cómo fue el proceso de producción?
Esta película tiene, realmente, un significado especial para mí por mi cercano trabajo con los actores. El proceso fue duro (¡como siempre!), sin dinero ni tiempo suficiente (¡como siempre!, pero estoy muy orgulloso del resultado, así, ahora, he olvidado las dificultades.

¿Vienes a LesGaiCineMad en Noviembre para presentarla?
Desafortunadamente, parece que no podré ir a Madrid, por el mucho trabajo que tengo con mis futuros proyectos.
