What is your film about?
It´s a film that seems to be wanting to say that we´re all equal, but what it says it´s much more and it´s much more simple: We are all completely different. And therefore, we need to be treated the same so we can continue being who we are. SPINNIN´ is built around a gay couple who wants to be parents. It shows the family structure from a new perspective. It is routed around the different storylines of the peculiar characters who surround the main characters. It proposes a canvas that reflects on the different ways to aproach possible love, fiendship, family and social relationships. A mix of comedy and drama. Doesn´t hide the pain of living, but it decides to show it from an optimistic point which proposes a basic idea: it hurts to live, but it´s worth it. It´s a film that shows that the characters are capables of making the world turn. It’s about characters that don´t just stand there waiting for the world to drag them.

How is it doing in the festival circuit? Has it received any award? Any other merit?
SPINNIN`works very well in festivals. It has been presented in the official list of more than 40 festivals in 20 countries, has collected in total 15 different awards, merits and recognitions. But mainly, SPINNIN` has harvested warm welcomings by the audience from different places, of different cultures, references and by the specialized critics of all those places. It has comercially premiered in Spain and is preparing its next premier in Germany in a circuit that will go through 18 different cities.

Who are the members of the cast and how was your relationship with them?
It´s a film that shows the different stories of the different characters and for that, I counted with a very vast cast of more than 40 actors, headed by Alejandro Tous, Olav Fernandez, Zoraida Kroley and Agus Ruis. As one one of the mainly points of the movie is to show how a family is structured and in which links it is based on, we decided that the best way to set the production and the filming was for ourselves to form a family and that´s what we did. The relationship between us was absolutly great. Everyone put everything he had to give and we behaved like a family: loving each other, supporting each other, talking, playing, defending each other, proposing and navigating on the same shared dream.

How was the production process?
It was very hard to get the financing. Some producers were interested on the project, but they would end up dropping us at some point of the road. We decided to put “all hands on decks” and produce it ourselves. We own very little money and therefore, the movie needed to be of a very low budged. However, the script had many characters and settings. Doing our match we realized that the only way to organize the production to be able to make the movie with that budged was to invent a new inter relationship system between all the peple involved on the production of the film. It looked very difficult, but we created a system that ended up being a very natural way to organise our production. But it requiered a lot of limitless effort from everyone. We were lucky to find the most generous team of the world and the production process that was a vital and very special and enriching experience. To see everyone working so much for a project that inspires you to work more and that would inspire the others to keep surpassing themselves. It created an spiral dream that end up drifting to our story and that you can see it if you watch our film.

Are you coming to LesGaiCineMad in November to present your film?
Yes, I´ll be “roaming around” the festival from beginning to end.

¿De qué trata tu película?
Es una peli que parece querer decir que todos somos iguales, pero dice algo mucho, mucho más sencillo: que todos somos absolutamente diferentes y, por tanto, necesitamos que se nos trate igual para poder seguir siendo como somos.
SPINNIN’ se estructura entorno a la historia de una pareja de chicos que quieren ser padres y muestra la construcción de una familia desde una perspectiva nueva. El recorrido por las diferentes historias de los peculiares personajes que rodean a la pareja protagonista, propone un lienzo en el que se reflexiona sobre los distintos acercamientos posibles al amor, la amistad, la familia y las relaciones sociales. Mezcla drama y comedia. No esconde el dolor de vivir, pero decide mostrarlo desde un prisma optimista que propone una idea básica: vivir duele, pero merece la pena vivir. Es una película que muestra personajes capaces de hacer girar el mundo, personajes que no se quedan esperando a que el mundo les arrastre.

¿Cómo está funcionando en festivales? ¿Ha recibido algún premio? ¿Algún
otro mérito destacable?
SPINNIN’ funciona muy bien en festivales. Ha estado presente en la sección oficial de más de 40 festivales en más de veinte países, ha cosechado muy diferentes premios, menciones y distinciones hasta llegar a la quincena. Pero sobre todo, SPINNIN’ ha cosechado muy calurosas acogidas por parte de públicos de muy distintos lugares con diferentes culturas y referencias y de los críticos especializados de aquellos lugares. Se ha estrenado comercialmente en España y se prepara el próximo estreno en Alemania en un circuito que recorrerá salas de 18 ciudades.

¿Quiénes son los actores y qué tal fue tu relación con ellos durante la
preparación y rodaje de la película?
Es una película que muestra diferentes historias de diferentes personajes y, para ello, cuenta con un reparto muy amplio, de más de 40 actores, encabezado por Alejandro Tous, Olav Fernández, Zoraida Kroley y Agus Ruíz. Como una de las cuestiones que la película plantea es mostrar cómo se forma una familia y en qué se basan los lazos familiares, decidimos que la mejor manera de plantear la producción y el propio rodaje era que nosotros mismos formásemos una familia. Y eso es lo que hicimos. La relación entre todos fue absolutamente genial. Todo el mundo puso todo lo que tenía y nos comportamos como una familia, queriéndonos, apoyándonos, dialogando, defendiéndonos, jugando, proponiendo y navegando en una misma ilusión compartida.

¿Cómo fue el proceso de producción?
Fue muy difícil conseguir financiación. Varias productoras se interesaron por el proyecto, pero siempre acababan dejándonos tirados en algún momento del camino. Decidimos liarnos la manta a la cabeza y producir nosotros mismos. Conseguimos muy poquito dinero y, por tanto, la película debía tener un presupuesto de producción bajísimo. Sin embargo, en el guión había multitud de personajes y localizaciones. Echando cuentas nos dimos cuenta que la única manera de organizar la producción para poder hacer la película con ese presupuesto era inventar un sistema nuevo de interrelaciones entre todas las personas involucradas en la producción de la peli. Parecía muy difícil, pero creamos un sistema que resultó una manera tremendamente natural de organizar nuestra producción. Eso sí, requería del esfuerzo ilimitado de todo el mundo. Tuvimos la suerte de encontrar al equipo más generoso del mundo y el proceso de producción resultó para todos una experiencia vital muy especial y enriquecedora. Ver a los demás trabajando tanto por el proyecto te inspiraba a trabajar más y eso inspiraba a los demás a seguir superándose. Se generó una espiral de ilusión que acabó colándose en la propia historia y que se percibe si ves la película.

¿Vienes a LesGaiCineMad en Noviembre para presentarla?
Sí. Estaré ‘merodeando’ por el festival de principio a fin.
