What is your film about?
The photos’ bookcase is a short film-idea which, in two minutes, treats with irony a topic as important as the acceptance of the homosexuality in the familiar background. We try to do it in a light and direct way, without rhetoric or emphasis. So the situation seems as daily and close as possible, even to the heterosexual audience. What I care about the most is the main character’s problem being seen as something really common, something one could face without being afraid and even with humor. The short film is not the traditional familiar drama, which could turn out into something alien to people who have not lived that experience.

How is it doing in the festival circuit? Has it received any award? Any other merit?
The short film is working marvelously, even better than we thought. It has received 29 awards in a year of distribution and it has been selected in around 80 festivals all around the world. It is situated in the best short films’ list which will represent Spain in Shortmetraje, the annual exhibition of Spanish cinema in the USA. Furthermore, we are very happy because the short film has turned out to be pleasant for everybody. Despite been received as an spectacular way among the gay world, I think the major success of this short film has been the acceptance of the audience in general.

Who are the members of the cast and how was your relationship with them?
This is a peculiar short because we see the characters through the photographs in the bookcase, there is almost no action. The only professional character is the main character, Fernando Núñez, who puts his voice to narrate the story in first person. With him, everything has come up spontaneously because we have worked together in some other occasions and I am very happy because of the spontaneity which has managed to transmit. The rest of the cast who are in the photos are friends who have accepted to play the role of boyfriend, brother-in-law and sister of the main character. Moreover, every other member of the technical staff appear dressed up in wedding clothes in the photos. The truth is it has been fun.

How was the production process?
It has been really quick. Perhaps it makes a bad impression to say it, because we try to stand out who difficult is to shoot a short film (and it is true!), but in this case we were supported by an excellent script by Susana Lopez and we wanted to show the idea without the intention of doing it an aesthetically spectacular. We did care most about the message and, of course, about how to express it, but without pretentions of grandeur. So we put together some friends in a single morning to take the photos, we printed and framed them, and the following day we shot the sequence with the photos well arranged in the bookcase. In a few days, we have made the editing and the music. Said in this way, it looks easier than what it really is, because it is about playing with a few basic elements to create a credible story which affects to the audience, and that is not achieved without some effort. But comparing it with other “common” short films whose production process lasts a year approximately, this short film has been relatively simple.

Are you coming to LesGaiCineMad in November to present your film?
Yes, I mean to go. I love to go to festivals, which is where you really feel rewarded for the work you have done. Besides, there will be the market and a lot of interesting activities. We will see you there.

¿De qué trata tu película?
El mueble de las fotos es un corto-idea que en dos minutos intenta tratar con ironía un tema tan importante como es la aceptación de la homosexualidad en el ámbito familiar. Intentamos hacerlo de una forma ligera y directa, sin retórica ni énfasis, para que la situación parezca lo más cotidiana y cercana posible, incluso para un público heterosexual. Lo que más me importa es que el problema del protagonista se vea como algo muy normal, un problema al que uno pueda enfrentarse sin miedo y hasta con humor. No es el típico dramón familiar, que puede resultar ajeno a quién no haya vivido esa experiencia.

¿Cómo está funcionando en festivales? ¿Ha recibido algún premio? ¿Algún otro mérito destacable?
El corto está funcionando de maravilla, incluso mejor de lo que esperábamos. Ha ganado 29 premios en un año de distribución y ha sido seleccionado en unos 80 festivales en todo el mundo. Está en la lista de los mejores cortos que representarán España en Shortmetraje, la muestra anual de cine español en EEUU. Además, estamos muy contentos porque el corto le resulta entrañable a todo el mundo. A pesar de haber sido acogido de una forma espectacular dentro del mundo gay, creo que el mayor logro de este corto ha sido la aceptación del público en general.

¿Quiénes son los actores y qué tal fue tu relación con ellos durante la
preparación y rodaje de la película?
Este corto es peculiar porque vemos los personajes a través de las fotos en las estanterías, casi no hay acción. El único actor profesional es el protagonista, Fernando Núñez, que pone su voz para narrar la historia en primera persona. Con él todo ha surgido de forma espontánea porque hemos trabajado juntos en muchas ocasiones y estoy muy contento por la espontaneidad que ha logrado transmitir. Los demás que aparecen en las fotos son amigos que han aceptado jugar a hacer de novio, cuñado, hermana del protagonista. Además, todos los miembros del equipo técnico aparecen en las fotos disfrazados de boda. La verdad es que ha sido divertido.

¿Cómo fue el proceso de producción?
Ha sido realmente rápido. Quizás queda mal decirlo, porque siempre se intenta resaltar lo difícil que es hacer un corto (¡y es verdad!), pero en este caso nos apoyábamos en un muy buen guión de Susana López y queríamos reflejar la idea sin la intención de hacer una obra estéticamente espectacular. Nos importaba más el mensaje y por supuesto, cómo expresarlo, pero sin pretensiones de grandeza. Así que en una mañana hemos reunido a unos amigos para hacer las fotos, las hemos imprimido y enmarcado, y al día siguiente hemos rodado la secuencia con las fotos colocadas en el mueble. En unos pocos días hemos hecho el montaje y la música. Dicho así, parece más sencillo de lo que realmente es, porque se trata de jugar con pocos elementos básicos para crear una historia creíble y que afecte al espectador, y eso no se consigue sin esfuerzo. Pero comparándolo con otros cortos “normales” cuyo proceso de producción dura un año aproximadamente, este corto ha sido relativamente sencillo.

¿Vienes a LesGaiCineMad en Noviembre para presentarla?
Sí, mi intención es ir. Me encanta ir a los festivales, que es donde realmente te sientes recompensado por el trabajo que has hecho. Además estará el mercado y muchas actividades interesantes. Allí nos veremos.
