What is your film about?

“The World Unseen” is set in South Africa in the 1950s and it is about the unexpected relationship between two very different women. On a deeper level, it is about integrity, honesty and daring to challenge conventions, no matter where you are or what community you are born into.

How is it doing in the festival circuit? Has it received any award? Any other merit?

“The World Unseen” has done incredibly well on the festival circuit. It has won 21 awards to date, including many Audience Awards which is very special for me, because viewers have clearly responded well to the film.

Who are the members of the cast and how was your relationship with them?

Lisa Ray and Sheetal Sheth play the two leads. They work very differently on set, and I had a great time with both of them. I learned a lot about their acting processes and they were fun to have around, and passionate about their work, which is important for me.

How was the production process?

Production was wonderful. I owe most of that to my partner, Hanan, who is the best producer I could wish for, in that she is very careful to keep the creative vision intact while keeping the budget manageable. She works very hard and we assembled a team of mainly women, who were all excited about the story and bringing it to the screen.

Are you coming to LesGaiCineMad in November to present your film?

I wish I could be there to introduce “The World Unseen” but I have prior travelling commitments, but I hope maybe next year!

¿De qué trata tu película?

“The World Unseen” se sitúa en la Sudáfrica de los años 50 y es sobre la relación que surge de forma inesperada entre dos mujeres muy distintas. A un nivel más profundo, trata sobre la integridad, la honestidad y el atreverse a retar a los convencionalismos, sin importar de dónde seas o en qué comunidad hayas nacido.

¿Cómo está funcionando en festivales? ¿Ha recibido algún premio? ¿Algún otro mérito destacable?

A “The World Unseen” le ha ido increíblemente bien en el circuito de festivales. Hasta la fecha ha ganado 21 premios incluyendo muchos Premios del Público, lo que es muy especial para mí porque indica claramente la buena acogida de la cinta por parte de los espectadores.

¿Quiénes son los actores y qué tal fue tu relación con ellos durante la preparación y rodaje de la película?

Lisa Ray y Sheetal Sheth interpretan los dos papeles principales. En el rodaje tienen formas de trabajar muy distintas, y lo pasé muy bien con ambas. Aprendí mucho sobre su forma de afrontar la interpretación y fue divertido tenerlas alrededor. Son apasionadas con su trabajo y eso es muy importante para mí.

¿Cómo fue el proceso de producción?

La producción fue maravillosa. Le debo casi todo a mi compañera, Hanan, que fue la mejor productora que jamás pudiera haber deseado. Pone mucho cuidado en que la visión creativa permanezca intacta sin descuidar el control del presupuesto disponible. Trabaja muy duro, y como el equipo estaba mayoritariamente formado por mujeres, todas estábamos muy excitadas por la historia y por llevarla a la pantalla.

¿Vienes a LesGaiCineMad en Noviembre para presentarla?

Me gustaría poder hacer en el festival una introducción a “The world unseen” pero tengo otros compromisos de viajes que son más prioritarios. ¡Espero poder hacerlo quizá para el próximo año!
